Rishi Sunak has made two new year resolutions: eat less sugar and try to get more sleep. Addicted to Mexican Coca-Cola, cinnamon swirls and burning the midnight oil, he has already told aides he is not confident of achieving either.

As he embraces 2023, the prime minister will need all the energy he can muster for his in-tray, which is bursting with an impending recession, cost of living crisis, spiralling inflation, a de facto general strike, conflict in Ukraine and his own divided party.

Other issues likely to cause him sleepless nights include the NHS backlog, which has now reached a record high of 7.2 million people waiting for treatment, large numbers of migrants risking their lives crossing the Channel in small boats, and a potentially explosive row with the Eurosceptics in his party as he seeks to reach a deal with Brussels over the Northern Ireland protocol.
