    Gander the Newfoundland dog was the pride of the Royal Rifles of Canada. During the Battle of Hong Kong in 1941, Gander courageously grabbed an incoming Japanese grenade and carried it away from his Canadian comrades. For his selfless sacrifice, Gander was posthumously awarded the Dickin Medal by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA). Considered the “animals’ Victoria Cross”, the award recognizes “conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty.”

    甘德上士喺1941年11月隨同加拿大軍抵達香港。
    12月18號，日軍登陸香港島。12月19號甘德上士同同袍喺黃泥涌峽激戰期間多次咬日軍，期後日軍用手榴彈驅逐加軍，甘德上士奮不顧身用口叼走手榴彈英勇殉職。:~(

    //甘德雖然是軍團吉祥物，亦有參與戰鬥，憑藉一身黑毛在黑夜間出奇突襲，兩度阻止日軍攻勢。根據士兵Reginald Law回憶：「甘德看起來見到日軍就生氣咆哮，然後跑去咬住他們的腳跟。日軍可能不知所措，未有開槍還擊。」

    12月19日C連且戰且退其間，甘德見到有一枚日軍手榴彈被拋到7名加軍傷兵附近。牠懂性地跑過去，用口叼起手榴彈，然後跑向日軍方向。手榴彈然後爆炸，甘德犧牲自己拯救了同袍。//
